INDOOR AIR QUALITY
VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS

Summary:  Gases are emitted from many things used in manufacturing cars, houses, RVs etc. The effect is to cause health problems ranging from very serious to no known effect (see below).  The effect on indoor air quality is much greater than the effect on the outdoors.  Cars and RVs are particularly affected because of the small volume.

Effects on health (US Environmental Agency):  Eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches, loss of coordination, nausea; damage to liver, kidney, and central nervous system. Some organics can cause cancer in animals; some are suspected or known to cause cancer in humans.  Key signs or symptoms associated with exposure to VOCs include conjunctival irritation, nose and throat discomfort, headache, allergic skin reaction, dyspnea, declines in serum cholinesterase levels, nausea, emesis, epistaxis, fatigue, dizziness.

This is a problem we all need to address.  We can contact manufacturers and we can insist on more natural and organic materials.

The following quotes from the US Environmental Agency:

"Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted as gases from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a variety of chemicals, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. Concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors (up to ten times higher) than outdoors.  VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products numbering in the thousands. Examples include: paints and lacquers, paint strippers, cleaning supplies, pesticides, building materials and furnishings, office equipment such as copiers and printers, correction fluids and carbonless copy paper, graphics and craft materials including glues and adhesives, permanent markers, and photographic solutions.

Organic chemicals are widely used as ingredients in household products. Paints, varnishes, and wax all contain organic solvents, as do many cleaning, disinfecting, cosmetic, degreasing, and hobby products. Fuels are made up of organic chemicals. All of these products can release organic compounds while you are using them, and, to some degree, when they are stored."

Adding to the story ... Readers comments:

Debbie E :  My allergies are worse when traveling in the RV. No matter how clean and dust free we make it, I still wake up with swollen eye lids. I have no control over the eye problem but I use nose spray when my sinuses act up. I used to take pills but I don't like the side effects. We have no pets in the RV. I think that RV manufacturers should be more concerned with the selection of materials. When one has allergies one becomes philosophical and very practical. It would be lovely if at least the manufacturers would not use materials that are known to be allergens. I think it would be a selling tool that is never considered.

Joanie :  My allergies are much worse in my rv. I seem not to be able to control my allergies very well in the rv. Our first rv (a new Fleetwood 2000) had stickers all over the inside saying that formaldehyde was used in the manufacture of the different components. No wonder I was sick all the time. What other toxic chemicals were coming out of the carpet and the fuzzy fabric ceiling? Is there more cancer and other ailments because we are being poisoned? Thoughtful of the manufacturer to warn us about these chemicals. Did their lawyers tell them to do that? Should be more concerned about the selection of materials?: Yes.
